St Stithians suffer defeat in Saints derby

SANDTON – St Stithians College soccer team was handed a 3-1 defeat by rivals St John's College in a Saints derby.

St Stithians College football team recently visited city rivals St John’s College in a battle of the Saints soccer match played on the Mitchell field. The boys from Sandton were on the back foot from the onset with St John’s proving to be the stronger side on the day, handing their rivals a 3–1 defeat.

St John’s right back Ike Anagu put in a star performance on the day. Ike managed to get himself on the scoresheet and provided an assist. Kamile Kum also got his name on the scorecard before captain Stefano Osato netted the third goal for St John’s.

Armaan Singh scored the consolation goal for St Stithians.

The first half was less entertaining with both teams trying to find their rhythm. As the game proceeded, St John’s looked threatening on a number of occasions through striker Brett Peters, however, his finishing let him down. Kamile broke the deadlock before the interval to give St John’s a 1–0 lead with a well-struck shot beating St Stithians keeper Thabani Maguranyanga.

The second half saw Ike surging forward with pace, beating the St Stithians midfielders before slotting past shot-stopper Thabani from just outside the box to double his team’s lead. St John’s continued to run riot as Stefano evaded his marker in the box and added the third for St John’s from a corner kick.

Miscommunication between the St John’s defence and goalkeeper Tim Leech, saw a miscued clearance evade Tim and the ball fell kindly for St Stithians striker Armaan who easily tapped in the consolation goal, making it 3–1.

The closing stages of the game saw St John’s hand out caps to debutantes Liam Barrel and Mpho Makgamathe, while St Stithians pushed more bodies forward but that didn’t yield any positive results.
