Have you witnessed any misconduct by the Metro police, but don’t know who to report it to? The City of Johannesburg Department of Public Safety has encouraged residents to report unprofessional, untoward and unlawful behaviour to the Metro police Internal Affairs Department.
MMC for Public Safety, councillor Michael Sun said, “We are building a professionalised Metro police department in the City of Johannesburg and this is a continuous process. One of the major projects we initiated is rooting out corruption within the JMPD.”
The department in the past three months has received 32 complaints, leading to eight Metro police being dismissed.
Sun has encouraged residents to assist in improving the Metro police by reporting misconduct by following these steps:
- Lodge a complaint to the Metro police’s Anti-Fraud and Corruption hotline on 080 020 3712 with description, date, time and location of the incident
- The complaint may be required to submit a written statement or an affidavit with the supporting documents, photos, recordings and any other evidence that could help the investigation
- A case number will be provided once the case has been opened, the assigned investigating officer will start with the investigation and the complaint will be informed of the progress of the investigation
- Depending on the severity and the seriousness of the case, a separate criminal case maybe be opened with the local police
- Complaints should make themselves available during the legal process, assist with the investigation process and the court process. The complaints will remain anonymous during the Metro police process.
Sun said it is important to lodge a proper case with the right members of the police or police department, as it may result in inaccurate reporting.
