JMPD officials recently attended to illegally parked taxis on West Street in Sandton. The traffic management operation saw JMPD officers impound unroadworthy taxis and other vehicles in the vicinity.
Following complaints from motorists, Metro visited the area where they found taxis and other vehicles parked illegally, making it difficult for traffic to flow freely.
MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun said they will not allow chaos on the roads. “We have a high number of taxis and vehicles that park all over, specifically in front of the Gautrain Station and we cannot tolerate such. Motorists have been contacting [the police] complaining. Operations like this will keep going on in Sandton and we shall deal with drivers parking illegally,” he said.
As part of the operation, Metro police officers also impounded unroadworthy vehicles. “We have a high number of such vehicles on our streets and they also need to be dealt with accordingly. All impounded vehicles were taken to the JMPD offices and the driver will be required to come release the vehicle and pay a fine.”
Sun concluded that the impounded vehicles will also be examined before being released. “We will have to determine if the vehicle needs to be repaired or not and we will continue with such operations to keep our roads safe.”
