Learners take on mentors in Sizanani soccer tournament
MORNINGSIDE – The Lycée Jules Verne French International School hosted the Sizanani Mentorship Programme for a little friendly competition.

Together with the Sizanani Mentorship Programme and the StadeJoburg sports association, the Lycée Jules Verne French International School in Morningside hosted a soccer tournament on 13 October.
The programme, first launched in 2007 to provide learners from the Alexandra community with mentors and career guidance, has connected 85 mentors with 113 learners this year.
At the tournament on 13 October, learners from the mentorship programme were able to level the field as they played against their mentors. The tournament was co-sponsored by multinational French corporation Saint Gobain, who also sponsored T-shirts for each learner playing in the tournament and soccer balls for each person on the winning team.

According to tournament representative Coralie Sefzig, the mentorship programme goes far beyond professional and educational advice. “The learners also have the opportunity to visit companies (Bombela, Anglo American, Standard bank, Sunninghill hospital, Saint-Gobain, MA Automotive, Decathlon, World Bank, etc.) and do job shadowing,” she added.

The programme has also provided bursaries and funding for its learners. Sefzig added that almost half of the Sizanani learners enter into university.
The programme is widely supported by both the French International School who hosted the tournament as well as the French Consul Sonia Dona Perez.
