Sandton friends look out for SPCA

SANDTON – Three friends have donated a brand-new vehicle to SPCA following their participation in the Put Foot Rally.

Sandton-based associates Gert van Zyl, Paul Warner and James Gresty will soon get a guard of honour from Lower South SPCA.

The trio embarked on the Put Foot Rally competition earlier this year, which is an adventurous journey crew members undertake to raise funds for new school shoes to be donated to young learners across Southern Africa.

The three friends raised R150 000 from their 8 000km trip, as reported in the Sandton Chronicle article Locals rough it for SPCA [Week ending 16 August]. The funds were donated to schools in Zambia, however, after an additional fundraiser, the team bought a new GWM vehicle for SPCA.

SPCA marketing manager Dalene Erasmus said the Sandton friends have done something that will remain in their hearts forever.

“We’ve got a big rural area and we were reliant on a small NP200 bakkie which made it difficult for us to reach dogs in need on time.

“At times we are faced with emergencies, a dog is sick or injured and we need to attend to them as soon as possible. So this bakkie will definitely come in handy. We will now be able to perform community outreaches and dog sterilisations in the community. We’re very excited to say the least.”

Van Zyl said it was a big task and that were they happy to have bought the vehicle. “We are very delighted, it was worthwhile doing something like this for the SPCA. I mean, the people who work there are totally passionate about their job and we will definitely stay in touch with the organisation.”
