Be water wise
SANDTON – Residents are urged to get involved in the fight for water as Rand Water announced Stage 2 restrictions.
The Fight For Water campaign has taken shape across the city following Rand Water’s announcement last month that it would be implementing Stage 2 water restrictions in Johannesburg. Water and sanitation minister Lindiwe Sisulu called on the country as a whole to urgently cut back on its water usage.
According to the entity, the city’s water usage has increased at an alarming rate, which is of serious concern as we are currently experiencing extreme weather patterns. “The entity has begun throttling reservoirs at the rate of 20 per cent to 40 per cent in line with restrictions imposed by Rand Water,” said Johannesburg Water communications manager Isaac Dhludhlu.
How can you do your part in the fight for water? Practice these water-saving tips:
- Do not leave taps dripping
- Wash your car on the grass. This will water your lawn at the same time
- Use a watering can instead of a hosepipe
- Shorten your showering time
- Use a glass of water to rinse when brushing your teeth
- Take shallow baths – avoid filling your bath to a depth greater than 100mm.
“We need all hands on deck to ensure that we reduce consumption in order to protect the infrastructure,” Dhludhlu added.
MMC of Environment and Infrastructure Services Department, councillor Nico de Jager, has urged the community to continue to report all leaking water meters, burst pipes and open hydrants.
