Chief of Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) David Tembe delivered the performance report for October at the City’s chambers in Braamfontein on 20 November.
This is the last report to be tabled during mayor Herman Mashaba’s tenure. Mashaba initiated the JMPD monthly reports that have been running for a year.
Tembe said under Mashaba’s leadership, JMPD had made significant changes and improvements. “Because of Mashaba’s support, officers are working four days and getting four days off which has minimised accidents and improved their performance,” said Tembe.
He added that since he took over, 60 women have been promoted to senior positions. He hoped the monthly reports would continue after Mashaba had left office because it was the same reports that ‘keeps us on our toes’.
The statistics showed that in Midrand, Diepsloot, Lanseria and Fourways, there were six operations conducted and 57 arrests were made for driving under the influence of alcohol. Out of the 126 crime prevention operations conducted, eight arrests were made.
In Randburg, Rosebank, Greenside and Cresta, 85 arrests were made for driving under the influence of alcohol. A total of seven vehicles were impounded, 17 unroadworthy cars were discontinued and 1 856 citations were issued.
In the inner-city, Braamfontein and Yeoville, 100 arrests were made for driving under the influence of alcohol and 195 were arrested during 16 crime prevention operations.
Tembe said there were 44 road fatalities in the month of October – 14 drivers, five passengers and 25 pedestrians. He noted that there was a need for an intensive campaign to teach pedestrians about road safety.
