In an effort to revive the student council, City of Johannesburg speaker councillor Nonceba Molwele visited the Marlboro Gardens Combined School on 4 February.
Two learners from the school, Jade van Vyk and Bonolo Mashike, will join this year’s student council.
Principal AE van Zyl was delighted to welcome the speaker to the school. “It is an honour for councillor Nonceba Molwele to visit our school. We have 1 400 learners in the school who are taught by dedicated and professional teachers,” Van Zyl said, reaffirming the school commitment to its learners.
“I am excited to arrive at the school. For the second year in a row, they have had a 100 per cent pass rate, the school is behind Alexandra,” Molwele said.
The Johannesburg Student Council is made up of more than 100 energetic learners from 60 schools around the city. “These are Johannesburg’s future movers and shakers,” added Mowele.
“We are dependent on you, our young people. Without our young people, we have no future. We will work with the student council in mentoring other learners from other schools from different corners in the City of Johannesburg,” she said.
Mowele added that the aim of the council was to give a voice to the youth of the city, allowing them to raise issues and possible solutions that are of particular interest to high school learners. “At the same time they are learning everything there is to know about local government, from how political decisions take effect to the duties and responsibilities of everyone involved.”
The Johannesburg Student Council falls under the responsibility of the Office of the Speaker.
