Erosion consumes Field and Study Park
PARKMORE – The banks of the Field and Study Park's special feature, the Braamfontein Spruit river, continues to deteriorate at a rapid pace increasing safety concerns.

The riverbanks of the Braamfontein Spruit which flows through the Field and Study Park has become of great concern to avid park-goer and hands-on contributor Rose Johnson. Johnson noted that the river has become the park’s most special feature over the year but it is a shame to see it deteriorate at such a rapid pace.
Johnson has been working with the park for just over 23 years with the committee to preserve the future of the park. “Concentrating on the park, I then saw how the erosion at the weir was getting bad. On more than one occasion I had a stormwater expert came and advised what should be done but no one would listen,” Johnson said.
She added that as the erosion continues, unwanted litter and trees have begun to fall into the now open space. “We have lost trees as the bank has receded and with every storm, a chuck of the river bank falls down into the huge gully now at the bottom of it.”

Johnson added that because the size gully continues to increase the elements are expose which proper a number of safety and danger concerns. “The edge of the bank is getting dangerous, there is a sewer that is overwhelmed every time and a tar strip that is in mid-air. Sooner rather than later someone will step onto it and it will collapse.”
Johnson noted that although she has tried on a number of occasions to report the matter to Johannesburg City Parks and Zoos, she is constantly passed from one person to the next.

City Parks and Zoo’s spokesperson Jenny Moodley stated that the stabilisation of water bodies that are catchments for stormwater is the responsibility of the Johannesburg Roads Agency.

In spite of all efforts to reach out, the roads agency had not provided comment by the time the publication went to print.
