Wrapping up just over one month in lockdown, the once infamously busy streets of Bryanston and Sandton remain eerily calm and quiet.
The Sandton Chronicle took to the streets to suss out just how well residents are complying with the regulations of the lockdown.
The national lockdown, initially expected to last 21 days, was extended by President Cyril Ramaphosa on 9 April.
Ramaphosa announced that an additional 14 days were to be added to lockdown in order for South Africa to better contain and manage the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus.
Early on into the lockdown Sandton was identified as one of the epicentres of the virus.
Residents in the area appear to have taken the comment to heart as the atmosphere remained silent on a not-so-typical Sunday afternoon.
Most people remained indoors with only a handful of cars on the roads.
William Nicol Drive, Rivonia Road and Sandton Drive in particular resembled that of a ghost town.

Rivonia Road remained relatively bare all the way through and into Sandton CBD.
It is strange to think that just over a month ago Sandton CBD was a buzz

Bryanston Drive appeared to have a little more traffic on the route but all of which could be attributed to residents making their way to the Riverside Shopping Centre.

Off the roads, the same calm and muted atmosphere could be felt in Sandton City as shoppers keep their distance.
Many parts of the mall were closed off in order for the centre’s security to better manage foot traffic.

The shopping centre also encouraged people to simply come in to buy essentials and leave. Many of the sitting areas were closed and benches stacked upon one another.

With the transitioning from Level 5 to Level 4 on 1 May later this week, residents are encouraged to remain at bay, stay in their homes and keep the streets empty.
