Tennis and language lessons at Sandton Racquets Club
MORNINGSIDE - Sandton Racquets Club in Morningside has partnered with language agency, Extralingual, to give youngsters tennis and language lessons during school holidays – all at the same venue.
Anna Mbongue, director of Extralingual, is interested in using sport as a new way of encouraging learning which is why she has collaborated with Drago Elez, owner of Sandton Racquets Club.
Mbongue and Elez have started the holiday programme for youngsters aged from three to 10. Mbongue will teach new languages to the youngsters while Elez will give the tennis lessons at his club.
“They learn, play and have various activities throughout the day,” said Mbongue. Parents drop their children off at the club in the morning and pick them up late afternoon.”
Languages currently offered include English, French, German, Portuguese, Italian and Spanish, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Venda, Afrikaans, Tshwana, Swahili and many others.
The club is situated in a park on the corner of Ballyclare and Outspan roads and has undergone a number of upgrades throughout the years. However, the club still needs further upgrades and financial assistance to keep it going, which is why Elez said programmes such as the collaboration with Extralingual would help in this regard.
Elez wants to keep the club running for recreation and leisure activities for residents and their children. With the assistance of the City of Johannesburg and community members, he plans to add on to the facilities at the club and eventually add a gym.
The club also donates tennis equipment to underprivileged communities such as Alexandra where, he said, youngsters have shown great interest in tennis.
