Bring them out of the boardroom
JOBURG - In its 13th year the J.P Morgan Corporate Challenge attracted a record total of 13 796 runners, joggers and walkers from 237 different companies to Wanderers Club to participate for a good cause.
The original challenge began in 1977 in New York with 200 runners from 50 companies and has grown exponentially, transforming into a 13-city, seven-country event held on five continents as a way to celebrate workplace fitness and camaraderie.
The event was introduced to South Africa in 2004 and Johannesburg kicked off the challenge in style with the corporate community moving their competitive nature from the boardroom to the streets.
This year’s beneficiary for the third year was Laureus Sport for Good Foundation whose participating ambassadors included former South Africa footballer Lucas Radebe and swimmer Natalie du Toit. The foundation uses sports to create positive change in society and has raised more than R80 million through various projects and programmes that have helped more than 80 000 people.
J.P. Morgan made a donation on behalf of all participants towards funding the foundation’s Youth Empowerment through Sport (YES) programme, which focuses on equipping youth with the technical, vocational, entrepreneurship and life skills needed to develop sustainable livelihoods.
In the men’s challenge, Olebogeng Masire, representing Sibanyegold claimed first place in a time of 00:19:18 with Tshamano Setone of Passenger Rail Agency of SA finishing in second place clocking 00:19:26. In third was Ntiti Konana of Sibanyegold in a time of 00:19:32.
