Local schoolboy selected to join Rand Central Local Area Football team

SANDTON – A Grade 8 football player from Crawford College in Sandton has been awarded his district colours.

 

A Grade 8 boy from Crawford College in Sandton was recently selected to be part of the Rand Central Local Area Football (LFA) team.

Football fanatic, Daniel Shapiro, has been selected for the third consecutive year and was also awarded his district colours in a colours ceremony at Emmerentia Primary School.

Daniel plays his football at Randburg Football Club and is the goalkeeper for their U14 Academy Team. Randburg FC falls under the Rand Central District or LFA.

He was selected to go to trials along with many other players from various clubs such as Wits, Old Parks, Stars of Africa, Florida and many more).

Eventually, he was selected to the final squad to participate in the Inter-District Tournament, which is an annual tournament between various district sides of the south, east, north, Pretoria and central.

At this tournament, Daniels’ U14 team went the distance and met SLFA in the finals on 31 August. When these two teams met in the group stages the result was 0–0. RCLFA won the final 3–1 after being down 0–1.

District coach and Randburg Little League convenor. Roger Niken said, “I have coached Daniel Shapiro in my Randburg FC and RCLFA District teams for the past three years.

“He has shown great character and work rate to become a top class goalkeeper and first choice goalkeeper in this time for club and district.”

Niken said apart from Daniel’s progress with his goalkeeping ability, he is a diligent worker at training sessions, being a regular and punctual attendee.”His hard work has not only been recognised by myself, but also by fellow coaches for other age groups.”

Daniel’s geography teacher, Anthony O’Connell said, “Daniel is a charming young man. He is a treat to have in the classroom as he is always well mannered and considerate of his peers. He always tries his hardest no matter what the challenge is, and I expect big things from him in his future.”

Daniel quoted former football player Jose Mourinho who said, “Football is a game about feelings and intelligence.”
