The tennis courts are again abuzz at the Bryanston Sports Club with lots of social tennis and training happening ahead of imminent leagues and tournaments.
Chairperson of tennis at the club, Derrick van der Peet said the competitive season was about to start.
This means the club’s seven men’s teams and at least three women’s teams will kick off their Egoli Premier League matches in the first weekend of February.
“We want all our teams to stay in their divisions this year, but our women always finish near the top of their division,” he said.
This league finishes in March.
Then there are two more leagues played in the year: the first from May to June and the second from September to October.
In-between these leagues, players compete in various tournaments, including the club championships in November.
The top women players in the country also convene at Bryanston for the annual Wiphold Next Gen Camp and Tournament in late June and early July.
This is organised by South Africa’s Fed Cup team captain, René Plant, who also plays at the club.
On the less competitive side, social tennis is played every Saturday and Sunday, and non-members also play privately on the courts during the week.
Lastly, Tennis Inc. is the coaching academy run at the club, which sees juniors fill up the courts for training every week.
“I would encourage anyone to get out and enjoy the fresh air. Come play a match or two.”
