Ego-mindful Sundowns vows to avenge Shell Helix Ultra Cup defeat to Chiefs

An egotistical Mamelodi Sundowns says it is ready to avenge the embarrassing defeat it suffered at the hands of Kaizer Chiefs in the Shell Helix Ultra Cup on 12 October.

The two sides are due to meet in the Absa Premiership first-round clash at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on 27 October and the Brazilians coach Pitso ‘Jingles’ Mosimane has already fired the first salvo ahead of the crucial game of egos.

“If Chiefs think they are done with us [as in the Helix Cup], then they got something coming. This [Helix Cup] was nothing more than a friendly in which we had to rest and rotate the squad to give others a run and show what they got,” said Mosimane at the post-Helix Cup match press conference.

The Yellow Machine, as Sundowns are known to their avid fans, were humiliated 4–2 in the Helix Cup, and the scoreline was even worse at halftime as Amakhosi already had a 4–0 lead.

The scoreline infuriated Mosimane who then loaded his most potent ammunition in the second half and managed to reduce the deficit to a respectable scoreline, although the Masandawana coach thought very little of the encounter and referred to it as more of a ‘friendly’ than anything.

“Come big business on Sunday [27 October], and Chiefs will not see what hit them. They must not read too much into this game which we considered as a friendly. We have different goals at Sundowns and one of them is to keep winning the league so we can keep playing Champions League football.

“We want to be up there with the best in Africa, and may be grabbing our second star which has eluded us for some time now,” said Jingles, whose side is the only unbeaten team in the Absa Premiership so far.

Mosimane has also boasted about the thrashing of AmaZulu in the Telkom Knockout round of 16, saying this was the tip of the iceberg of things to come and went on to compare his side with the likes of Manchester City who demolish rivals with huge scorelines in the English Premier League.

“We should also aim to be ruthless in our games and really inflict an emphatic defeat on our opponents if the opportunity allows,” said the Brazilians mentor.

‘Abafana bokuthula no xolo’, as the Phefeni Soweto giants are known to be ‘peace lovers’, hope they will be the first ones to inflict the first league defeat on the Yellow Machine as AmaZulu did in the previous season that the Brazilians went on to annex the league in a successful defence.

“We will count our chickens when they hatch on Sunday,” was all Amakhosi coach Ernst Middendorp was prepared to say ahead of the clash.
