Women run to make a change

SANDTON – The national all-female running community, Catch Me If You Can, hosted its annual Women for Change run to take a stand against gender-based violence.

Women of all ages and backgrounds came together to make their mark in the fight against gender-based violence when the all-women running community, Catch Me If You Can, hosted its annual Women For Change Run at Sandton City on 30 November.

The morning run consisted of a vibrant atmosphere of women who were ready to add their names to a worthy cause. According to co-founder Sabrina Walter, this campaign is of great importance because all women in South Africa deserve a voice as they are all facing a dangerous and terrifying reality.

“South Africans are reeling from a series of horrific attacks on women and children, which gave rise to protests across the country. According to the latest Crime Statistics by SAPS, a woman is murdered every three hours in South Africa.”

The first Women For Change event took place at the Tokai Forest Guest House in Cape Town in March 2015. “Only a few days after the brutal murders of Franziska Blöchliger in Tokai Forest and Sinoxolo Mafevuka in Khayelitsha.”

The event was attended by more than 3 500 people from all over Cape Town who came together to pay their tribute to every person who has been a victim of gender-based violence in South Africa. “Since that we had several Women For Change runs in Johannesburg and Cape Town to drive awareness on violence against women and children in South Africa. Thousands of women, men and children have joined us nationwide to end this epidemic.

“As women, we need to stand united to put an end to violence against women and children! Let’s run together to claim back our safety and cherish the beautiful souls, who have been senselessly killed in this country.”
