Girls are taking to rugby like fish to water at Bryanston Honey Badgers.
Weekly practices see more than 50 girls do drills and play friendly matches at the one-year-old club, while a free rugby clinic on 15 February attracted about 80 girls, mostly new to the club, to try the sport out.
Drills on passing and catching a rugby ball correctly were the first order of the day. Then before they knew it, the lasses were passing down a line, sometimes having to quickly offload, before tackling dummies.

Coach James Swann entertained the girls with his funny antics and demonstrations of how not to pass a ball.
This eased some tension and created a non-judgmental and friendly atmosphere for the girls to learn the sport.
Next up was a friendly touch-rugby match for the girls, and they all had a blast. Some even scored tries.

“Today is all about getting youngsters involved in the game and having fun,” Honey Badgers vice-chairperson, Chris Kyprianides said.
“The girls especially can learn so much from the game and each other and support each other.”
Club chairperson, Anthony Losco agreed that the day was a success in introducing girls to the sport.

He divulged another development at the new club, that of it partnering with Johannesburg Police Rugby Club (Bobbies) in Bergbron.

The two rugby clubs will support each other by attending each other’s development days and clinics and filling in for each other when players are needed for matches.
Kyprianides invited any businesses interested to contact the club about sponsoring the girl’s team and attaching their name to the side.
The club has Facebook and Instagram pages as well as a website for community members to follow.
