The Sandton Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) recently rescued two pitbull type dogs from a panel beater in Kensington.
According to Jaco Pieterse, general manager at the Sandton SCPA, “Both dogs were kept on short static chains with limited movement. The dogs were living in their own faeces which had not been cleaned for weeks.
“Last week the Sandton SPCA issued a warning for the owner to clean the living conditions and remove the dogs from the chains.”
Pieterse said the owner ignored the warning and left the dogs in unacceptable conditions which contravene the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.
“The Sandton SPCA obtained a warrant from the Johannesburg Central Magistrates’ Court and confiscated the two dogs in terms of the Animals Protection Act.
“The owner will now be facing criminal charges for animal cruelty. If found guilty the owner can face a fine of up to R60 000 and/or three years imprisonment with a criminal record.”
Pieterse gave a stern warning that the Sandton SPCA does not tolerate animal cruelty.
“We believe in educating animal owners before taking legal action, however, if an animal owner ignores our recommendations and warnings then we have no other option but to enforce the law to the full extent. These two dogs were rescued by the Sandton SPCA and we will fight for justice to be served.
“We urge the public to report animal cruelty to the Sandton SPCA by calling 011 444 7730. We can assure any person reporting animal cruelty that their details will be kept confidential at all times. Let’s stand together and fight animal abuse.”
