Chess champion puts opponents in checkmate

MORNINGSIDE - Redhill school pupil, Ricky Marketos, participated in the South African Commonwealth Chess Championships in Port Elizabeth, where he was placed in the top 15 in the Under 12 section.

More than 900 participants from 29 countries participated in the competition, including eight Grandmasters, making placement in the top 15 an outstanding achievement.

Marketos also had the privilege of meeting Russian chess Grandmaster Garry Kasparov and listening to President Jacob Zuma, a keen chess player himself, at prizegiving.

He is now looking forward to competing in Switzerland in the Biel Chess Festival.
