Premier League mourns Mandela

JOBURG - In mourning the passing of former President Nelson Mandela, the premier Soccer League has dedicated all its matches from tonight up until the eve of his burial to memory of the late statesman.

Following a meeting this morning of the Premier Soccer League, chairperson Dr Irvin Khoza has confirmed that the Telkom Knockout final scheduled for tomorrow night will go ahead as planned.

Khoza also announced that the Absa premiership fixtures will also go ahead tonight and on Sunday.

“All league and National First Division matches will, between now and the day before [Mandela’s] funeral be dedicated to our nation’s first democratic President, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. On the day of his funeral, there will be no league nor first division matches played,” Khoza said, adding that all the scheduled fixtures will remain the same.

However, in an event of a scheduled match venue for an Absa premiership fixture being used for an official memorial service, that fixture will be rescheduled, Khoza added. A moment of silence in honour of Madiba will be observed at all league matches from tonight until the funeral and all league clubs will wear a black arm-band.
