According to a fellow inmate who wished to remain anonymous, the prisoner slashed his throat at 2am. The source claimed the deceased was due for parole but his incarceration had been extended for another month.

Communications co-ordinator at Leeuwkop Prison, Mona Coetzee, confirmed that a death occurred at the prison and that the authorities would be investigating.
