Life is a bowl of frosting at the South African Cake Decorators Guild

SANDTON – The South African Cake Decorators Guild was founded in 1976 and aims to promote cake decorating.

The South African Cake Decorators Guild (SACDG) meets once a month to demonstrate some of the many interesting sugarcraft techniques in the world of cake decorating.

The guild is affiliated to the British Sugarcraft Guild, the Australian Sugarcraft Guild and the International Cake Exploration Societé (Ices) which is the American guild.

All the branches meet once a month where a demonstration of one or other of the many interesting sugarcraft techniques is held.

Sue Reid, national president of the SACDG said the demonstration on 2 June was done by Jackie Oosthuizen. “Jackie demonstrated the making of petit fours and instructed on the finer points of perfectly coated petit fours.

“Our next meeting at the Ullmann Park recreation centre takes place on 7 July and the demonstration will be buttercream piped flowers demonstrated by Suzie Baliki, member of the West Rand Florida branch. Time 9am for 9.30am.”

The guild is open to anyone who is interested in cake decorating. The guild also has their own sugarcraft magazine only available to members and issued three times a year. There are a number of branches in Gauteng.

The guild is a non-profit organisation founded in 1976 with the aim of promoting the growth of the cake decorating community.

Currently, the guild has 41 senior branches and six junior branches across South Africa with a membership of 1 000. The guild has an examination system and assessments take place.

Jackie Oosthuizen instructs Gail Fowlds on the finer points of petit fours at the recent guild meeting.

They also have accredited teachers with a high standard of tuition who pass on the art of sugarcraft. In addition, they also have their own panel of judges to judge various cake shows.

Anyone interested is welcome to join the meetings, and there is a small charge for their cup of tea/coffee and some lovely eats. Visitors will see a wonderful demonstration of one of the many sugarcraft techniques.

The Ullmann Park branch meetings take place on the first Friday of the month from 9am to 12pm at the Ernest Ullmann Park Recreation Centre on Minto Road, Morningside Manor, Sandton.

The Sandton branch meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 9am to 12pm at St Michaels Church, on the corner of Bryanston Drive and Mount Street, Bryanston.
