An new initiative created by Cadbury will travel around the country to reward those who donate books, toys and games to orphaned children.
The Little Generosity Shop, which will be at Sandton City Mall until 17 June, encourages people to donate goods they are no longer using to children in need.
The shop hopes to shed light on the roughly 3.7 million orphaned children in South Africa and give ordinary community members the opportunity to make a difference. When visiting the shop, people can drop off their items, which will be donated to a number of non-profit organisations around the country.
People will also have the opportunity to write a note to the child their goods will go to and there will be an interactive wall where they can pick a random act of kindness to complete.
Cari-Ann Lo, the senior category brand manager for Cadbury, explained that they were shown statistics about orphaned children in South Africa and were absolutely shocked.
“A lot of those children haven’t be exposed to playing with their own toys or games and we really wanted to assist with the early development of kids and also bring simple joy to their lives.”
Lo added that through the Little Generosity Shop platform, South Africans are able to give back in an easy way that can still make an impact.
“I think people really do want to participate and help in their own way,” Lo added.
Tamryn Seopela, the category brand manager for Cadbury, added that the Little Generosity Shop will be travelling across the country so that people can take part and donate their goods.
The opening of the store coincided with World Play Day on 28 May, which was instituted by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund to celebrate learning through free play and fun.
