Organisation gives endangered animals a voice

RACE Against Extinction, a non-profit organisation, hosted a fundraiser at La Vie En Rose in Hyde Park.

The organisation focuses on conserving the world’s endangered animals, particularly those facing extinction mostly due to illegal wildlife trafficking – which is especially rife due to traditional medicine.

According to director of the organisation Sharon Salomon, their biggest concern lies with the extinction of the tiger as there are less than 1 000 Bengal Tigers left in the wild.

“There is a need to have animals in captivity to allow them to survive. We are living in a society where impoverished communities poach animals because they believe in their medicinal properties, and if they [the endangered animals] are placed in conservation, there is a better chance for survival,” said Salomon.

The organisation works closely with Lory Park Animal and Owl Sanctuary based in Midrand and helps promote and educate the community on environmental issues and wildlife.

Lory Park is important for bringing awareness to rural areas where less fortunate children get the opportunity to see endangered species in a protected environment.

Salomon invited her guests to enjoy the lush gardens of the restaurant and were treated to a three-course meal, Latino band El Cantante and a gift bag.
