Depression group speaks out on Robin Williams’ death

SANDTON - The news of the death of comedian and actor Robin Williams by alleged suicide has saddened the South African Depression and Anxiety Group in Sandton.

Meryl Da Costa from the group said Williams always looked happy and had a smile on his face, however, depression can affect anyone. “It doesn’t discriminate against race, age, or gender,” she said.

The Oscar-winning actor died at the age of 63 in his home in Northern California, on 11 August. Authorities suspect suicide but the cause of death is still under investigation.

Zane Wilson, founder of the group said, “We receive calls, e-mails and texts daily from people who are considering taking their own lives. There are 23 completed suicides in South Africa, and a further 230 attempted suicides every 24 hours.”

Da Costa added, “If you know of someone who may be at risk of being suicidal or who is feeling depressed, or if you need help, please call our suicide crisis helpline.”
