The bridge was opened to traffic on 17 January after its closure in March last year. “We wish to sincerely thank the community and road users for their patience while construction work was underway,” said the roads agency’s spokesperson, Bertha Peters-Scheepers. She added that the ongoing communication with the Riverclub community was paramount to the success of the completion of the project.
“The new Coleraine Drive bridge is now a robust structure that will ensure the accessibility and safety of road users to the area for many years to come,” explained Peters-Scheepers. Asphalt surfacing has been completed, as well as the road markings. Peters-Scheepers said storm water, inlet and outlet channels, and landscaping are all still being finalised with an addition of grass on outer sides of the bridge.
She added, “At the moment, the roads agency is awaiting Eskom and Neotel to channel their cabling onto the bridge. Signs have been placed on both sides of the bridge and two speed humps have been erected on both sides for traffic control.”
The City of Johannesburg identified a total of nine bridges that need attention as part of the roads agency’s project to repair bridges and culverts damaged by higher than average rainfall patterns in February last year.
An estimated amount of R37 million has been set aside to repair the damaged bridges and culverts.
Peters-Scheepers said five out of the nine bridges have been completed, while the remaining four are due to be completed between January and April this year. The bridges and culverts that have been prioritised by the roads agency include:
•Main Road culvert, Riverbend Agricultural Holdings
•Felstead Road culvert, Northriding
•Third Street culvert
•Watercombe Street culvert
•Cornelius Road culvert over Klein Jukskei River
•Ballyclare Drive bridge over Braamfontein Spruit, Bryanston
•Niven Road culvert, Douglasdale
•Riverside Road bridge, Ivory Park
•Coleraine Drive culvert, Sandton
