SANDTON – The Thandulwazi Teacher Development Programme celebrated a successful year of learning during a closing ceremony hosted at St Stithians Boys' Preparatory Tree Quad.

Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy celebrates another year of teacher development.

The Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy celebrated a successful year of learning during a closing ceremony hosted at St Stithians Boys’ Preparatory.

The St Stithians Foundation founded the academy in 2006 in an effort to improve the teaching skills of educators who teach math and science at schools across Gauteng.

Teachers meet on a Saturday morning at St Stithians to sharpen their teaching skills and this year, 1 200 teachers were involved in the popular programme.

Bev Johnson, deputy head of advancement at St Stithians College said, “This annual event is a wonderful celebration of teachers, at which Thandulwazi recognises their commitment to their profession and their learners, their hard work and their individual achievements over the year. It is also an opportunity to thank the Thandulwazi workshop presenters, volunteers and partners in education, and our generous funders.”

Iris Francis Cupido, CEO of the SABC Foundation, gave an inspirational address at the ceremony focusing on the theme of teamwork and collaboration. She said teachers needed to be more than just educators. “Children today need validation, they need to be inspired and told they are valuable,” she added.

“For many children, their homes are no longer safe spaces so schools become their happy place.”

Teacher Louis Bhengu of Gideon Rambuwani Primary School, who has benefitted from the programme this year said, “Now, I am a totally different teacher from the one that walked into the gates of Thandulwazi earlier this year.”

The programme’s director Ronelle Klink said, “Next year we hope to continue to inspire teachers to collaborate and embrace the journey of professional development.”
