The Sandton Police Station has begun a campaign against cell phone theft occurring at the Sandton Gautrain Station.
Captain Granville Meyer, the spokesperson for the Sandton Police Station, began the campaign two weeks ago. He said the Sandton Police Station has been identified as one of the police stations in Gauteng which have a high rate of cell phone theft reported.
Meyer performs the marimba for commuters, to entertain and attract attention while posters urge passersby to be aware of the high rate of cell phone theft in the area. “This campaign is also part of our crime prevention interventions to curb the occurrence of cellular phone theft,” said Meyer.
He explained that the Sandton Gautrain Station and the surrounding area have become a hotspot for cellular phone theft and robberies. “The campaign thus far has also displaced the crime and no cellular phone theft occurred at the Gautrain station or the immediate vicinity in the past two weeks.”
Meyer added, “Music possesses a unique power for any campaign that’s why I’m using it.”
He highlighted that the campaign was not only about cell phone theft prevention but also to improve public relations. He hopes that the public will appreciate that the police are proactively working toward solutions to crime.
“The citizens may increasingly participate in crime prevention efforts and may start seeing the police as prevention partners instead of a sanctioning force, which will help to improve public-police relations.”
He concluded that it was important to show that the police were a concerned public entity and were working on crime prevention.
