Parkmore residents experience contamination in water supply

PARKMORE – Water tankers are in the area to provide affected residents with water.

The Parkmore Community Association (PCA) has informed residents of a contamination of its water supply.

A number of households in Parkmore are finding dirty or oily substances in their water.

It is reported that this is due to a leaking cable that has hydraulic oil required for cooling the cable. It may have been damaged when a section of the pipe was repaired.

This caused the oil to seep into the soil and into the community’s water supply. In a letter to the affected households, Joburg Water highlighted that houses on 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th streets between Lillian and Victoria avenues are affected by the contamination.

“Johannesburg Water’s first priority is to restore the water quality back to drinking water standards and is working timelessly to do so. Part of the process to restore the water quality is to flush out the contaminated water from our supply system,” said the letter signed by the general manager of operations, Etienne Hugo.

Ward councillors Vincent Earp and Martin Williams were on site when Eskom sub-contractors arrived to evaluate and temporarily repair the leak.

“Eskom got a subcontractor to come on-site this afternoon to do a temporary repair. They will then come back with a permanent solution,” Earp said.

In a Facebook post, the PCA noted that the water supply will remain off while the excavation and repairs are carried out.

“After the water has been turned back on please continue to check your water and also flush your system if you are in the affected block. We suspect some oil is still trapped in the pipes and you may need to flush for longer than 2 hours,” read the post.

There will be water tankers in the area. Residents who still have oil in their water supply are encouraged to contact the PCA.
