Sandton schools embrace e-learning

SANDTON – Sandton schools have embraced the mobilisation of education following the precautionary closure of all schools.

Sandton learners bring home their passion for learning.

Since the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa to temporarily close all schools by 18 March due to the outbreak of Covid-19, schools across the country were forced to find new and innovative ways to teach and communicate with their learners.

St David’s Marist Inanda in Sandown and the Lycée Jules Verne French International School in Morningside are among the schools who have fully embraced the announcement, equipping learners and parents with the tools that they need to continue their learning journey.

While St David’s was scheduled to go on their term break on 20 March, the French school was forced to act a little quicker as their term break was only scheduled to take place on 24 April.

Nonetheless, both schools created packages and guidelines for parents to follow, mobilising the art of teaching so that no learner missed a beat.

“While our boys have responded from a position of comfort because this tech world is their normal, we couldn’t be more proud of the speed, the efficiency and the effectiveness of our wider community response,” noted St David’s executive headmaster Mike Thiel.

Learners are able to join group or one-on-one video chats with their classmates and teachers.

“Our manifesto calls for us to be an exciting and innovative space, where failure can exist alongside success. You have all stepped up to the challenge with courage and proved that we are all that… and more, and we couldn’t be prouder of this community keeping excellence in education while keeping our community safe,” added Nick Clogg, headmaster of the St David’s Preparatory School.

A spokesperson for the French school, Nonhlanhla Kunene said, “In these difficult times for our school community, we thank you very sincerely for your understanding and support.”
